The Power of the Giraffe
Hawthorne Animal Hospital sponsors "Carol's Care Packages" for Anderson Hospital Cancer Center in Maryville, Illinois.
The Power of the Giraffe strives to help patients and families that are going through Cancer treatments. That help can be as simple as a small gift, one of "Carol's Care Packages" or even financial assistance for those in need. We know that we cannot lift the burden of Cancer, but our hope is lift the spirits of those in the battle now. We hope to give them the dignity, love and the knowledge that they are NOT alone. We know that others are searching for a cure, we want to help those in the fight so the cure can find them.

This past week one of my fellow co-workers had tragedy strike twice in the same week with her spouse. I knew that we must do something. She was having to travel back and forth to St. Louis to visit him in the hospital. The staff sprang into action and pitched in to give her a card with some cash to help her through this difficult time. On March 21st, 2014 we presented her with the gifts along with Carol's story and a small stuffed Giraffe. She was overwhelmed and very touched. She said she would have never expected this given that she had not worked there that long. We told her she is part of our family regardless of how long she had been there. She said she wanted to write a note of appreciation that we could post on the site. It is attached below.
Support for a unique charity in a unique setting
This week our little school district was shattered when one of our students was struck with a serious health condition. Immediately our hearts began searching for a way to help him and his family during this scary time. Our minds quickly began racing about things that would help his mother and him get through the difficult days ahead.
After reading Carol's story we knew what we must do. The process began by gathering snack foods, toiletry items and cash. On Saturday, March 15th, 2014, a group of teachers and students delivered our collection, along with a giraffe and Carol's story to the family at the hospital. We showered them with these gifts to help make their hospital stay and the days to follow, a little more bearable.
Our goal is that others will remember the story and stick their necks out for the next person that crosses their path. We are more than teachers; we are people that love our students and their families beyond the doors of the classroom.
